BLOODWISE

I fill my eyes
to the rim
drinking this
all in,

reeling it in,
spinning,
circumnavigating
the horizon, letting

go on a carousel
head tilted back
eyes shut wide
night drops

replacing the film
with dreams star-
projected through
each one of our bright
eyes wrung clear.

from beneath a slow
heaving murk and
over fire island
a coronation of
memories echoed
back to their
inceptions
in dark trees
whispering tendrils
against the surface
tension contacting
the big ship out
above all the
little fishes
flitted through
translucent darks
of shift flexing
halo flashes revealing
sombre reptiles resting
recharging to charge
and sting any
spirits drifting
through the becalmed
waters of Zawinul/Lava,

to me, this illustration is about
the power of literature, how an
elephant never forgets, and why
our dear reader, whose open book
has sparked a flame, is rooted and
transformed to the spot, grown
long and tactile fingers like
branches caressing lost fables
as shown to us since childhood
by a winged angel who must breathe
through a mutated gas mask hooked
into a chambered nautilus whose
feelers entwine and become the
umbilical connection to a post
wishing star story. i believe
the sunken leaning building faded
in the background is the real world.

these grounds.

Spirit carried
us away in
secrecy.

Sacrificed
children flower
into the universe,
an atom.

Choosing
not to be,
an agnostic
heresy is
invoked.

Flowing
poison
of eggs
laid in
an eye
socket.
